Autism, Visual Thinking, and Justifying the Humanities

You may recall that Fosco has been interested in the question of whether Ben's cat Isis (and all cats, for that matter) is essentially autistic. Fosco got this idea from animal researcher Temple Grandin, who is herself autistic and finds that her condition allows her to understand animals better than neurotypical observers. (Additionally, Fosco is actually pretty impressed with Dr. Grandin's jaunty style, as seen in accompanying picture.)

Well, a couple of weeks ago, Fosco picked up (at his local library!) one of Grandin's books, Animals in Translation. Grandin makes some pretty fascinating claims in the book, relying on both her experiences and insights from neuroscience. For one thing, she provides a model of animal perception that can account for some of the stranger aspects of animal behavior (although not all of them--she still can't explain why slowly-moving fans creep out cows).

One of Grandin's claims is that she and animals both think entirely in pictures (this is not a surprise for animals--what else would they think in? Words?). Grandin tries to explain what it is like for her to do complex human cognition entirely in pictures. It all sounds completely horrible to Fosco, who is highly verbal and cannot imagine trying to do justice to Derrida or Levinas without making use of words and abstract concepts. However, Grandin wants to argue that there are indeed benefits to entirely visual thinking:

Other times thinking in pictures is an advantage. During the 1990s I knew all the dot-coms would go to hell, because when I thought about them the only images I saw were rented office space and computers that would be obsolete in two years. There wasn't anything real I could picture; the companies had no hard assets. My stockbroker asked me how I knew the two stock market crashes would happen, and I told him, 'When the Monopoly play money starts jerking around the real money you're in trouble.'
This is a cute story, of course (although maybe not one I would have left in the manuscript were I Grandin's editor). I suspect that Grandin may have profited handsomely from our recent economic troubles as well--there are certainly no good mental pictures that can represent hedge funds and credit default swaps (although: most of this bubble seems to have been based on the housing market and houses are indeed "real" and easily pictured).

But I think this anecdote raises an interesting question: in what ways is it possible to value non-concrete (i.e., not easily pictured) things? Sure, the original dot-com bubble did burst; however, this didn't mean that the web itself is completely worthless. There are still plenty of companies that are "nothing" but office space and soon-to-be-obsolete computers (like Google, perhaps)--and while Google may (or may not) be overvalued, the services it provides are not valueless.

And yet, at the same time, there is clearly an anxiety about the possibility of valuing things like knowledge, information, content, etc.--and not just for autistic people or visual thinkers. As someone who is (supposedly) in the "knowledge business," I think these issues are worth meditating on, especially as the humanities are increasingly called upon to "justify their worth" in the modern world.

You can purchase several Temple Grandin books by following these links.

Fosco will receive a small percentage and will be grateful.

Animated Isis

Oz ran across this. It pretty accurately captures the behavior of our cat Isis (well, except for the part where the cat uses the remote). And it's surprisingly cute.

Isis gotta watch Wapner

Fosco has never had a cat before, but now he's helping to raise Oz's cat Isis. As Fosco has previously noted, he feels some anxiety about Isis's psychological well-being. He spends more time than he should wondering about Isis's thoughts and feelings. And he's actually gotten a little frustrated: what is going on in kitty's head?

That is, until he read this brief note in Sunday's NYT Book Review. Temple Grandin's new book Animals Make Us Human includes some interesting thoughts about cats. According to the review:

In her chapter on cats, she offers advice on how to prevent “cat explosions” at the vet’s office and mentions at least one book, “All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome,” that Inside the List would like to get its hands on. “Cats seem autistic,” she writes, “because they don’t come across as being sociable or eager to please like a dog, and also because their faces are kind of blank.”
Fosco thinks this is actually a pretty brilliant way to think about cats. From what he can tell of the book All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome, it is intended primarily as a teaching tool for people who want to understand Asperger's better; however, based on this summary of the book, it seems to offer a pretty decent description of cat behavior as well. So this is Fosco's new approach to thinking about Isis: she is the feline equivalent of an Asperger kid. And once you realize that, you stop worrying about why she doesn't always want to cuddle or why she sometimes ignores Tina Tuna or she both fears and loves crinkly plastic.

All this means, of course, is that Fosco was using the wrong cognitive model to represent Isis. He was thinking about her as a low-functioning but essentially "normal" human (hmmm, like a baby!). But Isis is not like most neurotypical babies; rather, she may be more like an Asperger or autistic kid. And Fosco can deal with that.

Isis and her new perspective

Fosco and Oz are celebrating their eighteen-month(!) anniversary this weekend. And their kitty Isis is joining in the fun by acting totally goofy.

Trust me, she's never done this "upside down head" thing before. At least not while we were there.

Isis sez: "Nope. You're still ugly."

Pictures of 2008: Cats!

Fosco recently realized that, by only blogging for three months last year, he never got to share tons of pictures with you from the rest of the year. So, for the next week or so, Fosco will offer a series of brief posts with some of his favorite pictures from his adventures in 2008. Check out the whole series here.

It's the final installment in Fosco's "Pictures of 2008" series, which will end on a feline note. Here's a photo of Oz trying to make Isis care about a stuffed Chococat:

And here are the KITTENS that Fosco and Oz found living under the front steps of a townhouse in Oz's complex last summer:

KITTENS!

Sing it with me, folks: "Oh! Well I never! Was there ever a cat so clever as magical Mr. Mistoffelees!"

Self-Indulgent Pet Story

Fosco already did his Christmas loot post, but he left an important question unanswered: what did Fosco and Oz's kitty Isis get for Kitty Christmas?

Which raises a second important question: when did Fosco become so dippy as to use the phrase "Kitty Christmas"? Readers: promise me that if Fosco ever posts a Christmas story about cats (especially if there is a disabled boy involved), you will stage an online intervention. Sigh.

Well, anyway... Isis got a new rubber brush, which she mostly doesn't like. (She prefers her hair to be tangled and skanky. Not unlike a certain British soul singer?)

She got a new IKEA Bästis toy to replace Condoleeza Mice. This is a fish named Tina Tuna. Even though Tina is filled with catnip (just like Condoleeza), Isis seems mostly uninterested. Which is kinda disappointing, because I wanted to see Isis go all Ike Tuna on that thing.

Isis's big gift, however, wasn't even intended for her. You may remember Oz's new Poäng chair from IKEA. Well, it turns out that Isis has claimed it for herself.

Oz has tried to keep her off the chair by covering it with his jacket (seriously?) and then by placing a plastic bag (Isis's nemesis) on the seat. You can see how that worked:

Isis only deigns to open one eye to survey Fosco's camera idiocy...

Seriously, Isis loves this chair so much she doesn't even sleep on the bed anymore. Once or twice a night, she hops from the chair to the bed to get some quick petting from Fosco and then heads back to the chair--like getting petted is a job or something that she has to commute to... We're thinking of trading her in for an Ultimate Wall-E.

Wow, Loot!

Despite the lack of fatal viruses, Christmas in Santa Cruz was wonderful, especially as it was Fosco and Oz's first Christmas spent together (last year, Fosco was in Snow Town). So what did Satan Sapna Santa bring us? I mean, besides joy and peace...

Remember how Oz has a bit of a collection going? Well, Fosco spent some quality time on eBay and came up with these beauties.

Yes, that Iron Man Mugg is a limited edition that was sold only at the San Diego Comic Con. And indeed, it does appear that Admiral Ackbar is saying "It's a trap!" (N.B., Admiral Ackbar knows when something is a trap.)

Fosco got a Mighty Mugg too! Remember Marvel's Vision? No? Well, that's why Fosco didn't have any friends in junior high. Well, at any rate, Vision was an android and a member of the Avengers (still not sounding familiar? Really?). Anyhoo, Fosco likes Vision and thinks he looks cool:

Look what Oz got for Fosco! Fosco loves this game, but had been holding off on owning it to prevent it from totally preempting his work. Is this the end of Fosco's academic career? Or does another, more lucrative, career beckon (viz. Rock God)?

Oz got a big present, too: does he know what it is?

Why, it's the IKEA Poäng Chair!

[See Isis skulking around behind it? She likes it for hiding.]

Fosco and Oz hope that, recession be damned, all of your material wishes came true this holiday season.

NYC Journal: Introduction

Fosco and Oz made it back from New York City early Monday morning. All in all, the travel was pretty smooth, especially considering that New York received the first two snowstorms of the year on the two days we were flying. Interestingly, our flight on Friday arrived at JFK airport twenty minutes early! Kudos to that airline with the lavender-lit fleet.

(Sadly, Fosco squandered those extra twenty minutes and more by insisting that he and Oz take the subway from the airport instead of a cab. This was a bad, bad idea. "Beat the traffic and be in Manhattan in just 35 minutes!" Lies!)

And how was New York? Well, for one thing, it was cold. Not cold for New Yorkers, I'm sure, but remember: Fosco has lived in Santa Cruz for 2 and a half years now. As for Oz, he's originally from the Sandwich Islands and had never actually seen snow. Indeed, there was much whimpering and numbness. (Although, after returning to a monsoon in San Francisco, Fosco and Oz do see some virtue in snow.)

But, of course, even in the cold New York is just better than any other city: more cosmopolitan, more intellectual, more interesting, more fun. I love watching someone read a French novel on the L train. Or wincing as our African immigrant cabbie changes lanes four times in one block. Or seeing a building lit up for Hanukkah.

In the next few days, Fosco will share more stories and pictures from the trip (including restaurant reviews: pastries, burgers, and Jean Georges!).

Oh, and for those of you who were wondering what Fosco and Oz's kitty Isis was doing all weekend while they were gone, I'm pretty sure this about covers it:

To tell the truth, that isn't much different from what Fosco does most days...

Isis and her girlfriend

Fosco and Oz are raising a kitty named Isis. Isis has a toy mouse that she loves (maybe because there's catnip inside). The mouse's name is Condoleeza Mice, but we just call her Condi. Never having owned a pet, Fosco didn't really understand cross-species same-sex attraction, but apparently there is lots of licking involved.

Isis sez: "Don't judge my relationship with Condi. We're in love."

Isis and toucans

Fosco and Oz have a kitty named Isis and she looks cute when she sleeps:

Of what does Isis dream? Why, of The Enchanted Tiki Room, of course.

Boo!

It's Halloween. That holiday that seems like it should still be fun when you're an adult (but isn't).

Fosco was on campus this morning and it occurred to him that Halloween at UCSC is a lot like Mullet Appreciation Day at WalMart: there's a difference, but it's hard to notice. I would estimate that only 1 out of 3 students wearing a weird outfit today was actually in costume. After all, this is a campus where some guy dresses everyday as Spike.

Fosco plans to spend tonight in bed, loaded with NyQuil.

But, before Fosco hits the hay, he'd like to offer you some scary pictures of Isis (who is, after all, a black cat). The first two pictures are only scary because Fosco's camera phone is crappy and Isis is speedy.

The final scary Isis picture is one of my favorites--I love it when she stands on her hind legs and I love it when she looks in the mirror. But what does she see... inside?

Isis loves the feel of crossed words.

Fosco and Oz have a cat named Isis. She's very odd.

Isis sez: "Three letter word for dinner is 'nom.'"

Isis tries to mail herself

Fosco and Oz have a cat named Isis. She's not quite right.

Isis sez: "Please send me to Pope, please. He like kitties."

New Developments: Kitty Bunker

From the "New Developments in the Life of Fosco" File:

Fosco and his boyfriend Oz are parents of a frequently skittish and occasionally peevish (is there any other kind?) kitty named Isis. Isis fears two things above all others: the vacuum and (sigh) plastic bags. Strangely, the crinkly sound of a plastic bag is enough to send Isis cowering under the endtable or burrowing to the back of the closet.

Fosco's boyfriend Oz has been around cats all of his life and he finds Isis's fears to be neither strange nor worrisome.

Fosco, on the other hand,

  • has never owned a pet and so feels a strong anxiety about the psychological well-being of Isis.
  • is an insomniac who lies in bed for hours, trying to "think like kitty."
  • is a typical graduate student who invents excuses not to do work.
  • is allowed to use pointy scissors.

Ergo, Isis now has a snazzy new cardboard bunker in which to hide from plastic bags.

Isis sez: "You can't find me now, Evil Target Bag!"
